Maintaining and Improving Your House: 5 Top Tips for New Homeowners

July 15, 2020

Maintaining and improving your house 5 top tips for new homeowners | lets be game changers lets be game changers

Jumping into home ownership is exciting! So exciting, in fact, that as a new homeowner, you often overlook key steps to take that will help you in the long run.

Buying a home is one of the most important investments in your lifetime. This means it’s extra important that you do things the right way.

Are you trying to figure out the best way to maintain and improve your house? Keep reading to learn 5 important tips for new homeowners.

1. Go Slow With Renovations

When you first move into your new home, it can be easy to get caught up in the excitement and want to dive into all of your renovation ideas at once. But in the long run, this will lead to a lot of stress and can be hard on your wallet.

Instead of doing everything at once, focus on one project at a time. This will help you space out things financially, in case the renovations don’t go as planned. Because let’s face it, projects often end up costing you more than originally anticipated.

You also may find that after living in your house for a month or two, some of the renovations you initially wanted aren’t really necessary.

2. Create a File for Your House

In the process of finalizing your mortgage, moving, and learning about the difference between a home warranty vs homeowner insurance, it’s easy to misplace documents. To avoid losing any important information that you may need down the road, create a home file where you store all of your paperwork.

Be sure to hold onto all house related pieces of paper. Whether it’s maintenance receipts, insurance quotes, or even the manual for your appliances, having all of these important documents in one place will save you a headache down the road.

3. Set Aside Maintenence Money

One of the biggest mistakes you can make as a new homeowner is to overspend at first on the fun stuff, like new furniture or decorations. This can lead to financial strain when you inevitably need some maintenance done on your home.

Instead of splurging on all of those things at once, purchase them slowly while simultaneously putting away some money for repairs. Unlike renting, being a homeowner means you are solely responsible for all of the maintenance on your home. So it’s important to be financially prepared when maintenance is needed.

4. Find a Good Handyman

Because maintenance is inevitable, it’s important to have a good handyman in your contacts. Do some research and have this person’s info on file before emergency strikes.

You want to find someone you can trust and who is well skilled in many areas. That way, they can help with an array of problems that may arise.

5. Inspect Regularly

When moving into your new home, it’s important to inspect all of the major systems and the overall structure of your house. But this initial inspection should not be the last time you look at these areas.

You should continue to inspect things in your home like the HVAC system, water heater, plumbing, and the roof at least once a year to avoid any unforeseen issues.

Use These Tips for New Homeowners

By following these tips for new homeowners, you are one step closer to enjoying your new home to its full potential. Becoming a new homeowner is one of the biggest and most exciting steps to take, and these tips will ensure that your investment is well taken care of.
